Mindful Music Listening - Online (English)

Flyer Mindful Listening

Mindful Music Listening (MML) has been derived as an online version of Regulative Music Therapy (RMT), which is a form of psychotherapy that utilizes music to expand one’s awareness and promote well-being. In MML, we are developing our ability to be more mindful in our everyday lives through practicing mindful music and self-listening. The method is inspired from Zen principles and was developed by Christoph Schwabe in Germany in the 1960s and is being used in Japan since 1980s, as well.

In MML sessions, while listening to various kinds of music, the participants are encouraged to move their awareness to different areas of their conscious experience, in particular, the music, their bodily sensations, and their mental processes such as their thoughts, emotions, and moods. After that, the participants are encouraged to share their experiences, so that the therapist and other participants can help them to continually develop their ability to expand their awareness.

In many psychological difficulties, symptoms persist and sometimes worsen because when we are suffering, we fixate on negative experiences or the symptoms. RMT offers a way to develop greater awareness of our perceptual experience which includes negative experiences and the symptoms, but isn’t bothered by them.

The primary purpose of MML is not to eliminate the symptoms, but rather to expand our awareness. The approach suggests that expanded awareness prevents us from both fixating on and denying negative experiences. The central principle of MML is leaving things as they are.

As a result, symptoms are often alleviated and we can become free from fixating on negative experiences. Through MML we can regulate stress-related tensions in our bodies and minds.

Difficulties that are often reduced by participating RMT:

-       Excess tension in social situations

-       Excess tension in performance-related activities (e.g. taking an exam, making a presentation or participating in a competition)

-       Lack of concentration, distraction

-       Getting lost in a loop of negative thinking

-       Sleep disorders

-       Psychosomatic symptoms (e.g. a stiff neck)

-       Obsessive compulsive symptoms

Effects of RMT that are often reported by participants:

-   Can cope with stressful events in a calm manner

-   Can use time more efficiently

-    Are not bothered by small things

-    Can think “Let it be” and trust that “Things will work out”

-    Can transition from negative moods to positive moods more effectively

-    Can be at ease in social situations

-    Are less prone to allowing physical ailments to affect their mental
     condition and vice versa

-    Are less irritable in general

-    Are more aware of their own feelings and can more effectively express
     themselves

There will be an assessment before and after the process to explore in what aspects participants might have benefitted from the program and to evaluate the impact of it. Participants will receive confidential information after the process.
